I’ll never forget the conversation I had with the cashier in the game shop in the small, unremarkable town I grew up in. It was the dawn of the Xbox 360 era, and up until that point I had been a fence-sitter in the previous generation’s Xbox/PS2 war. As a result I had been rather non-committal as to which console to jump on board with for the next generation, but something was about to turn the tide.
“The Science of Skyrim” may strike you as an oxymoron, and you may therefore find it very oxymoronic of me to try to argue otherwise. Between its magic and mages, demons and dragons, potions, poisons and racist lizard men, finding science may seem as likely as finding an adult female in the Pope’s bed.
Few things on this planet get me quite as excited as my favourite game on the Citadel, Mass Effect. If you’re like me, and cannot wait to stick it to the Reapers this March, then you too will be excited by this latest Mass Effect 3 gameplay video shown off at the Spike Awards on Saturday.
With just a few months left to go until gamers everywhere return to full Spectre status in Bioware’s upcoming Mass Effect 3, EA have put out a new video to get our Omnitools bulging.
Developers seem to have a bee in their bonnet about the FPS genre. So many games released in recent times have been sanctimoniously (and somewhat ambitiously) marketed as the ‘saviour’ of FPS. Games like Bulletstorm and Brink are among such entries which claim to bring much needed reinvigoration to the ‘shooter’ market. Codemaster’s latest offering, Bodycount, is pitched on the same promise; “putting the ‘fun’ back into ‘FPS’”. Did they?
In the gaming community, the word Activision tends to stir up mixed emotions – and that’s putting it mildly. Many regard CEO Bobby Kotick as being a maniacal satanic overlord, who has no greater wish than to strangle every last penny from the average gamer. It’s no surprise, then, that the announcement of Call of Duty: Elite was received with an air of curious suspicion by many. The release has been a disaster from Activision’s point of view; insanely high traffic has had the service floundering in a constant sate of unavailability. So it’s only right that we ask the question: is it worth your money and time?
The team behind the Modern Warfare series have never been seen as underdogs. Quite the contrary; ever since the release of Call of Duty 4 back in 2007, they have been seen as the ones who set the bar for shooters on the current generation of consoles. But by creating a game as mind-blowing as Call of Duty 4, that team (Infinity Ward) unwittingly created a rod for their own back- a standard that they themselves might never supersede. Or did they?
In Hollywood over the last few years there has been a rise in a phenomenon known as “mockbusters“. This is a movie which is released at the same time as a blockbuster, with a similar title, but direct to DVD. For example, when Michael Bay’s Transformers was released, a low budget “Transmorphers” was put out on DVD.
March 2012 seems like a long way away, but if like me you’re a big fan of Mass Effect, you have no choice but to wait for the weeks and months to roll by before you get another dose of it’s epic mythology. Or do you?
